Strengthening Eastern Europe’s flank – Prospects for the NATO Warsaw Summit

In its most anticipated report of the year, New Direction has uniquely brought together international political figures and Security and Defence experts to highlight what path NATO must choose in order to defend itself. This comes at a time when Europe faces the greatest threat to its security in decades, from the new form of terrorism to its Eastern flank on the Russian border.

Tomasz Poreba, President of New Direction said: "Both Europe and NATO face unprecedented threats on many different fronts. These range from conventional warfare through the expansion of terrorist groups and radicalisation of own citizens to information warfare and propaganda fuelled mainly by the Russian regime. Therefore, the Warsaw Summit is timely and should be used as an opportunity to decisively respond to these new forms of threats, which include hybrid warfare and cyber attacks."

The Defence Minister of Poland, Antoni Macierewicz, underlined that "Within just two years, the security of Europe dramatically deteriorated. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in Crimea and Donbas in 2014 led to the major violations of international law and international order. Then the mass-scale migration crisis occurred, only partially related to the humanitarian disaster in the Middle East. So far, Europe was unable to find an effective solution to them."
