Boosting EU Trade with South East Asia

A new report by New Direction, the Foundation for European Reform, calls on the European Commission to prioritise the creation of a Single Market with Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The report warns that growth of European trade and investment in Southeast Asia is already substantially lagging behind that of China and India, and that years of EU technical assistance in the region have not produced any tangible results.

The report's author, Dr Matthias Bauer, Senior Economist at the European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE) highlights the opportunities to be gained from renewed trade discussions with Southeast Asia, but cautions that the EU's current financial support facilities need to be redeveloped from scratch.
