Despite the fact that the Carpathians as an area fulfills the criteria for macro-regional strategies specified by the European Commission, the region is not included in any multilateral form of cooperation within the EU.
Under the leadership of our Vice President, Tomasz Poręba MEP, New Direction hosted a conference on the Carpathian region in Poland.
Although the region meets the European Commission's criteria for the adoption of a macro-regional strategy, there is no EU mechanism for cross-border co-operation (comment - your man in the street won't understand this - what borders need crossed etc).
Speakers at the conference stressed that the Carpathians remain one of the poorest areas of the EU, and called for a dedicated EU “Carpathian programme."
The conference was attracted widespread attention from the media and the public in Poland (comment - do we have any examples? hyper links etc).
